Every day, women receive subtle—and not-so-subtle—messages about their self-worth that affect them emotionally and relationally. According to research conducted by Dove,* 60 percent of girls are so concerned with personal appearance that they opt out of participating in daily life activities such as sports and attending school. Research psychologist Jennifer Crocker, PhD, says that college students who based their self-worth on external sources, including appearance and approval from others, reported more stress, anger, and relationship problems.** It should come as no surprise that these issues often affect women later in life.
