In February 2008, I prayed for two Malay women I had helped in the past six months. I hadn’t seen or talked to them very much because my husband and I were very busy working with the Tamil churches, organizing Bible training leadership development studies. I prayed for the Lord to give Kathy and Lisa dreams—the Malays believe dreams are very meaningful. I also asked the Lord to allow them to get sick. It may seem like a terrible thing to ask, but I needed an open door to pray for them.

A few days after my prayer, I woke up to a soft voice saying, “Take food to Kathy today.” My husband told me we didn’t have any money, but I insisted we had to obey the voice of the Lord. When we checked our account, we saw that our funds had come in early.
My husband and I went to the store and bought meat, rice and other goods. As we were going to Kathy’s house, my eyes were watering as I thanked the Lord for the privilege to give. When we got to her house, her daughter came out and greeted us with a big smile.
Kathy kissed me on both cheeks—like always—and asked in broken English if I knew that she hadn’t gone to work that day. I told her I didn’t know and asked if she was sick. She replied that she had a cough. When I offered to pray for her she just looked at me. I had never prayed with her so she probably didn’t understand.
After taking the groceries into her impoverished house, I boldly said, “Kathy, I will pray for you.” She looked at me strangely, but I laid my hand on her throat and quietly prayed, “Jesus, please touch her throat and cough. Heal her in Your name, Jesus.” I had tears coming down my face and her daughter, Erica, asked if I was crying. I noticed she had tears in her eyes. I shook my head “yes” as I put my hand on my heart. Kathy kissed me on my cheeks again and smiled as I left.
I got into the car and the Holy Spirit spoke to me all the way home. I felt so humbled. God doesn’t always speak through a great, loud voice or thunder from heaven. He often uses that soft voice you can hear only if you are listening to transform our lives.
