A Mission Field in Mississippi

The Mt. Carmel Church of God in Foxworth, Mississippi technically began in the 1920’s when five people from Cheraw got together and began to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to the area in Pickwick. It was officially organized as a Church of God in 1949 by Reverend Paris L. McLain with 22 chartered members.

In September, Bishop Tim and Sharon Bass will have pastored Mt. Carmel for 10 years. The church as grown and has a true heart to reach their community.
The first year the Bass’ were there, the church adopted a community mission’s project where they are building a bridge so their community will have an entrance into their church. Pastor Bass said they are building the bridge one plank at a time.

The church is in the process of completing some dormitory style lodging in the upstairs of their gym to accommodate future emergencies like they experienced when Hurricane Katrina tore through their town. They will also be available to the Red Cross and other ministry groups that come their way.

The debt-free church complex sits on three and one half acres of land approximately 40 miles west of Hattiesburg and just north of the Louisiana border. There is also two acres of cemetery lots attached.

We were just there for a few days of revival and were astounded when we saw where the church is situated in the beautiful woods of Mississippi. The road that leads to the church from the main highway hides the sanctuary until the very last curve. It’s wonderful to see how God is moving in through this congregation and how they are allowing the Lord to help them reach the community.
