Church of God Announces READ Initiative
Mark Williams, general overseer for the Church of God, has announced a year-long emphasis to read through the Bible in 2013. He formally announced the initiative to state and regional overseers, youth directors and others gathered in Atlanta for the bi-ennial Leadership Conference this week.
Using the acrostic READ, Williams has outlined his vision for over 100,000 people to join the challenge to delve more deeply into God’s Word. The initiative is focused on congregations, pastors, staff, and individuals, and resources are being provided, including a dedicated website, www.readinitiative.com. There, visitors can download apps and other resources, as well as sign the pledge to be part of the number who have committed to reading the Bible through in 2013.
“When the Word of the Lord is lost, cultural decadence and idolatry reign,” Williams stated, “but when scripture is rediscovered, the entrance to His Word brings light.”
In an introductory video found on the website, Williams outlines the acrostic READ with scriptural admonition to study the Bible. R stands for Reflect. As you work your way through scriptures, take the time to let the wisdom of the Bible sink in and change you deep inside. Think about where you are and how the scriptures affect your life.
E stands for Engage. The Bible isn’t just meant to be read. It is meant to be lived. This year live life fully, and engage with the scriptures as they are read.
A stands for Apply. Never forget that the Bible is just as applicable to our lives today as it has ever been. Don’t let the messages of the scriptures pass you by as you apply them every day.
Finally, D stands for Disciple. One of the best things about this journey is that we can take others with us. Invite those around you to join in the initiative and work alongside those who might never have read the Bible before.
