Unpublished Sermon by Martin Luther King Jr. Free at PreachingToday.com

PreachingToday.com, a ministry of Christianity Today, announced the release of a previously unpublished sermon by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called “Guidelines for a Constructive Church.”

Originally delivered during the height of the American Civil Rights Movement on May 29, 1966, this sermon was an exhortation on Luke 4 given to Cornerstone Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. Now for the first time, the transcript and audio of this sermon are available for free exclusively on PreachingToday.com.

This sermon reaffirms the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as an instrumental voice in American Civil Rights history and gospel proclamation as he calls the Church to confront the issues of broken heartedness, poverty, and to preach the year of the Lord. Dr. King challenges the Church to return to the cross of Christ, even amid the hatred, violence, and segregation of his time. Dr. King reminds his listeners that it is not an easy task, because “the cross means what it says. It is something that you die on.” However, Dr. King also proclaims a message of perseverance and hope that Jesus will never leave.

By offering full access to this sermon for free, PreachingToday.com is welcoming readers to participate in an ongoing conversation about the civil rights leader and his sermon from Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20 through Black History Month. In addition, PreachingToday will offer reflections on Dr. King’s sermon from several contributors, including the current senior pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Rev. Lawrence Aker III. As noted by Aker, this sermon “offered a clarion call to a nation in the tumult of the Civil Rights Movement, but it also brings a stirring for Christians today.”
