General Assembly Will Employ Latest in Communications

When delegates gather for the 75th International General Assembly this summer in Orlando, Florida, technology and connectivity will be at a level never before seen at the biennial gathering of the Church of God.

Social media, live streaming, electronic downloads, apps, and real-time updates will be employed as part of a strategic communications plan to bring the latest information to both on-site delegates and those logging in to follow the event online.

In addition to electronic media, traditional print media is part of the plan as well, with the continuation of the General Assembly TODAY publication distributed every morning at the entrances to the convention and exhibition halls at the Orange County Convention Center.

A full production team to implement the plan is in place and preparations have been underway for months. The plan originates from within the Church of God Communications Department and includes consolidation of news outlets, evaluation of all communications functions, and preparation of a news cycle timeline.

“Special consideration has been given to the way in which news flows from the General Assembly to the public,” stated David Ray, Director of Communications and chairman of the General Assembly cabinet. “We will have several teams in place covering various aspects of the news and happenings at GA2014.”

Ray explained that the production team at GA2014 will feature crews devoted solely to social media, the website, livestreaming and General Assembly Today. “All of these media have different, yet valuable delivery methods and timeframes,” Ray said, “creating a consistent flow of information.” He said a new feature this year will be an “anchor desk” where various hosts will conduct live interviews and report on the news of the business sessions and events of the assembly.

“We have a very unique constituency that attends the General Assembly,” Ray concluded. “We will have delegates that will have the latest in smartphone technology in their pockets, while sitting right next to them may be someone who may not even carry a cell phone. It is our desire and commitment to bring these constituencies together offering the best assembly experience possible.”
