McGirt Named Director of Charlotte Center
CHARLOTTE, NC – Dr. Jeffery McGirt has been tapped as the new director of the Lee University Charlotte Center.
The Charlotte Center is located on the grounds of the Western North Carolina Church of God state offices. The partnership between the state and Lee began in 1999 after the state closed down the former East Coast Bible College. The campus operates under Lee’s Division of Adult Learning (DAL) and offers undergraduate degrees for both traditional and adult students.
“We are excited for the passion and ministry experience that Dr. McGirt brings to the Lee University Charlotte Center,” DAL Executive Director Dr. Joshua Black said. “[McGirt’s] heart resonates with training up disciples of Christ and future leaders. The ministerial training programs that Lee University offers in Charlotte exemplify this.”
McGirt is no stranger to Western North Carolina. He comes to Charlotte after pastoring for over 20 years at East Laurinburg Church of God. He has served on both the State Council and Evangelism and Home Missions board during his tenure as pastor.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to coach and mentor future leaders for both the Church of God and the community at large,” McGirt said.
“Dr. McGirt is definitely no stranger to us at Lee,” Vice President Jayson VanHook said. “He and his family are committed to the university. I think that comes through in his commitment to make Charlotte Center an educational destination for ministry training in North Carolina.”
“Lee University has been committed to the Charlotte area, and all of Western North Carolina since 1999,” Black said. “The WNC Church of God has a fine tradition of training up men and women for Christ’s ministry and Lee University is honored to be a part of this tradition.”
As a satellite campus, students can earned fully accredited undergraduate degrees in courses designed for flexibility and an accelerated pace. Class sessions begin every eight weeks and offer several options for both traditional students and busy adult professionals to complete a degree.
“Charlotte Center is a vibrant center that is student-focused with qualified faculty to teach and train future leaders, “ McGirt said. “We encourage students to come, interact and share their journey together based on Jeremiah 29:11. After all, none of us can do what all of us can do.”
McGirt earned his undergraduate degree from UNC-Pembroke in Elementary Education and was a certified K-4 teacher before entering full-time ministry. He later received both his M.Div. and doctorate from the Pentecostal Theological Seminary.
McGirt is replacing Dr. Greg Sloop, who left last month to become Senior Pastor at Kannapolis Church of God after a 12-year tenure with Lee.
“There is no doubt that Dr. McGirt will make sure the Lee University flame continues to burn bright throughout Charlotte and Western North Carolina,” VanHook said.
