Liberian Orphanage in Dire Need
The Phoebe Grey Orphanage in Liberia, Africa, stands at the center of Church of God efforts to help a nation still gripped by the reminders of a long and tragic civil war, a nation ravaged by disease, a nation that continues to need moral examples, and a nation that must hear the message of Jesus’ love for them.
Improvements have been made at the facility, and the orphanage is one of the places where children are cared for, where education is valued by the teachers and students, and where the ever-present mindset is that Jesus is their provider. Many children resident are orphans from the Ebola plague.
Unfortunately, only half the budget has been received that is needed to provide upscale education, shelter, food, medical care, and to lead the children in discipleship. The country’s industry is underdeveloped and not prepared to assist the orphanage. The children are schooled in growing vegetables on a small plot of land, but even that is endangered by the lack of a security wall. Unscrupulous people drive to this land, place markers on the land they do not own, and then sell it to unsuspecting people causing the money needed for the children to be used in legal fees.
The Church of God has a vibrant ministry at this orphanage, but donor support to meet the necessary budget has diminished to approximately ¼ of what it has been for a number of years. Donors, too, are affected by the economy, changes in life’s circumstances, and sometimes redirect their interests, thus causing a depletion of funds.
