Christian Author Hopes to Turn Character into Talking Robot that Raises Big Questions
Bit the Bot is the simple, sweet story of a house cleaning robot who is forever getting into trouble of the technical and not moral variety.
While currently only a fictional character, work is under way to turn Bit into a real, talking robot that gets people asking big questions about the nature of the mind, soul, and moral decision making.
“Robots are natural attention getters,” says Chris Lind, the creator of Bit the Bot. “In the presence of a real, talking robot, it will be the most natural thing in the world to ask your self these sorts of questions.
Is there something that it is like to be a robot? Where do we go when we die? Are our minds merely the product of some sort of algorithmic or other material process running in a brain, or is self awareness ultimately spiritual or metaphysical in nature? Says Chris, “All of these questions are related…and they are some of the most important questions you can ask yourself. I believe that what you think about them ultimately influences every decision that you make, and consequently impacts every area of your life.”
To transform Bit into a real, talking robot, Chris has launched a search engine, www.TrueSearch.today. Bit, of course, is the TrueSearch mascot. As TrueSearch indexes websites for inclusion in search results, it will begin to build a massive database of interconnected facts and information that will comprise Bit’s “world view”…all of the things Bit can chat about.
A Christian, Chris does not believe that there will ever be anything that it is like to be Bit the Bot, or any other robot, however convincing they may become. “I believe that the human mind is ultimately spiritual in nature, and continues on after your physical body dies. I also believe the day is coming when it will be common place for you to walk into a store and find that the ‘person’ at the cash register or point of sale is an android or robot.”
If and when this happens, Chris hopes that Bit the Bot will have already entered the market place, and that Bit’s “personality and antics” will capture people’s hearts and imaginations, opening the door for conversation about the spiritual nature of our minds and souls.
