Campmeeting Season Now Underway
The 2016 Church of God campmeeting season formally kicks off today with a two-night gathering of the Northwestern Hispanic Region. Evening speaker for the April 1 and 2 campmeeting, being held in Fremont, California, is Church of God General Overseer Mark Williams.
Fifty-four state and regional campmeetings are scheduled for 2016, with over 90% scheduled for the month of June. Only two campmeetings are being held in the month of July, likely because of the July 19-22 dates of the upcoming 76th General Assembly in Nashville, Tennessee. The first campmeeting of 2016, Southeastern Hispanic region, was held on February 26 and 27.
Church of God campmeetings are primarily held in the United States in the summer months as they have been for generations. Of the 54 scheduled gatherings, three are held in Canada (Quebec, Manitoba and Ontario), and eight in Hispanic regions of the U.S. There is also a campmeeting for the Southwest Indian Ministries (June 7-10, Manuelito, NM) and a special one-day multicultural campmeeting set for July 20 during the general assembly in Nashville.
While campmeetings are generally held for the church members of that state or region, anyone is welcome to attend. Traditionally, summer campmeetings have begun on a Monday and lasted all week through Sunday, but the latest trend is for a shortened schedule allowing pastors to be back in the pulpit of their local church on Sunday. While the basic elements of a night speaker and a morning bible teacher remain, most states and regions invite multiple evening speakers. Some are also using the campmeeting pulpit to showcase successful ministers in the state/region.
