If You’re Called as a Prophet, Then You’re Called to Do This

If Jesus has called you as a prophet, then He has called you to LEAD and INTERCEDE within your sphere of authority. Every prophet is given an assignment that has borders.

We see something similar in the life of the apostle Paul. He said he was careful to not boast beyond the sphere appointed to him. (2 Cor. 10:13) The word used here for sphere, is the Greek word metron. It means a measure and a limited portion.

A prophet is to “govern” their spiritual assignment alongside the apostles, evangelists, pastors and teachers since it’s a leadership role (Eph. 4:11). Prophets watch over their assignment, prophesy to it, intercede for it and commit to other appropriate actions. The spirit realm knows who the real prophets are and will be responsive to their spiritual authority. You will see the fruit of their authority over time. To intercede means to pray and intervene in favor of another. The prophet will first hear from the Lord about their sphere. The Lord might reveal a problem. Other times the Lord reveals that He is doing a “new thing.” Whatever the Lord reveals often becomes the basis for intercession through the life of the prophet.

For example, when the Lord was preparing to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, He first held a meeting with Abraham about it. The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation?” (Gen. 18:17). Abraham then began to intercede with the Lord to save the city and negotiated on what terms the city would remain.

Abraham: Will you save the city if you can find 50 righteous persons?

The Lord: Yes

Abraham: How about 30?

The Lord: Yes

Abraham: TEN?

The Lord: I will not destroy it if there are 10 righteous persons.

That final statement was the “word of the Lord” for Sodom and Gomorrah. It was the final order and decree as negotiated by the prophet Abraham. The city did not have 10 righteous persons, however, and it was subsequently destroyed. Before it’s destruction, however, two angels went into the city to rescue Abraham’s nephew Lot and his two daughters. I bring that out just to demonstrate how connected the angelic realm is to the work of God’s prophets.

Once the general assignment has been established, how then does the prophet hear the Word of the Lord? Hebrews says He will speak in a variety of ways! Abraham and the Lord had face-to-face dialogues. That would be refreshing, but His voice comes with much diversity. I’ve found His voice is often cloaked and hidden, which forces me to be alert and watching for it. Even prophets do not always recognize the prophetic word if it’s not spectacular enough. God definitely speaks in spectacular ways. He also speaks just as powerfully with the still, small voice. He even hides His prophetic word in the mundane and ordinary. The prophet who really knows Him, will discern His voice hidden in things often dismissed by others.

The prophet then dialogues with the Lord about what’s being spoken. It can look like Abraham’s dialogue or something else. What is clear, however, is this interaction is relationally based. For me, I will usually dialogue for understanding. I often receive the word as a mystery (It will be something intangible and hard to explain.), and I will have to unlock it for clarity.

Once the prophetic word is established, the prophet then “sends it out.” That can be done verbally, in song, in writing, through instruction, through a prophetic act or through other methods. Whichever way it’s released, the Bible says it will prosper in the direction it is sent (Is. 55:11). This is how the prophet creates pathways, sets borders and gives assignments to the spiritual realm and governs their spiritual assignment. It’s not an ordinary word that they send. It is a prophetic word that has creative substance and authority on it.

How Hearing God’s Voice and Interceding Might Look for You

Let me share a personal example.

It took me a while to catch on, but I had noticed a short movie playing inside my imagination. It was one to two seconds at best. I would have dismissed it except that it repeated itself several times a day. What I was seeing was the scene of a mother bear fighting for her cubs. It reminded me of the bear on the California state flag. I just didn’t know why I was seeing it. The movie finally stopped playing in my head and it seemed like there wasn’t anything more to it.

About a year later, a minister from England came to speak to our church. She began to share a prophetic word that she had received in 2007 about the coming revival for the state of California. Her prophetic word had divided the state into three zones: North, Central and South with descriptions for each. Her description of the Central zone, the area where I live, intrigued me the most as she had accurately described our unique spiritual climate.

As she spoke, something began to stir in my heart for my own state. Come on California! You are the SonShine state! The Son will Shine on You!

A few months after, I was typing on my computer very late at night. All of a sudden I felt a presence. It was the presence of an angel. When the angel appeared, I drifted face first into my keyboard! I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that, but it happened just that way. Angels carry the glory of God, and the glory of God will impact you physically (Dan. 8:18; Acts 9:3-4; Rev. 1:17). I was also given specific instructions about how to intercede for my State.

Now I had the beginnings of a metron. I proceeded to hold prayer services nightly for a week at my church just to seek the Lord over it. I was pleasantly surprised at how many from my church joined me in an adventure that began with a movie playing in my head. It told me that the vision was real and there was an anointing for the assignment.

What was the Lord saying most specifically in all this? He was calling me, and my church, to pray for the children of our State. If the children did well, then California had a future. If they didn’t, then it would be lost. We began to cry out for the next generation like mothers looking for their lost children. When evil and perverse legislation was passed in our educational system (AB1266), we acted like mother bears fighting for our cubs. We prayed, campaigned and fought hard to secure our own city from aligning with it.

During those days of contending, I had visitations from angels, demons and everything in between. We encountered spiritual warfare that was so strange and wicked, I don’t even know how to describe it in this context. Jesus always prevailed in those instances, but the spiritual fight over children was very real. We are still contending for our state, but our metron is moving further out now. As our metron is noticeably expanding, we are putting first things first and seeking Him on what to do.

This is only one of many examples of how the Lord works through His prophets to lead and intercede within their assignment.

Are you a prophet? If so, you have a governing role that is recognized by the spirit realm. You will find yourself in passionate intercession to see the good things of the kingdom come forth in your zone. The angels will move about accordingly as you deal with the spirit realm through your life-giving intercession. Recognize that the Lord is ever merciful as you stand before Him insisting that cities and nations be saved.
