Hundreds Attend Smoky Mountain Gathering
A Smoky Mountain Gathering, the annual senior adult retreat for the Church of God, celebrated its 30th anniversary on April 26, 2022 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Hundreds of delegates from across the country joined together after a two year hiatus due to the Covid19 pandemic.
“Everyone was excited to be together once again,” said event coordinator Bishop Dusty Wilson. “We are indebted to our senior adults who have paved the way of Pentecost and pioneered a movement of the Church of God. We could not be where we are today without them.”
Wilson stated two individuals were honored in connection with the 30th anniversary celebration. Honorees included Rev. W.C. Ratchford, who is responsible for beginning the event, and Rev. James Cossey, who served as leader longer than any other individual.
Special guests helped celebrate the occasion and included Church of God General Overseer Dr. Tim Hill, Assistant General Overseers Dr. Raymond Culpepper and Dr. J. David Stephens, Secretary General Dr. John D. Childers and their spouses, comedian Dennis Swanberg, musical guests the Martins, New Speer Family, Geron Davis and Kindred Souls, Doyle Dykes and surprise keynote speaker Tommy Bates. Special events during the April 26-28 celebration included a Senior Adult Talent Showcase; Spirit Care Banquet for retired ministers and spouses, Ministry to the Military Breakfast, and much more.
Many individuals contributed to making the Smoky Mountain Gathering a success, including the SMG Committee of Anita Hughes, Phil Looney, Jerry and Tammy Mace, Tim Manness, Mike and Tena Welborn, and Mike and Sandy Wooten. Sandy Whitmire served as administrative assistant. Wilson offered special gratitude to all states and administrative bishops who helped sponsor the event.
