Peniel Ministries Partners with Care Division

Peniel Ministries, an independent, faith-based drug and alcohol treatment center located in Johnstown, PA, was recently added to the family of organizations associated with the Church of God Division of Care.

Peniel’s core mission is directed toward transforming lives by providing comprehensive, faith-based addiction treatment serving individuals who are struggling with substance abuse by addressing not only the physical and psychological aspects of addiction but also the spiritual, emotional, and social needs of clients.

Director Durean Coleman states Peniel’s program is uniquely rooted in the principles of Christian faith, offering individuals the opportunity for spiritual growth and renewal.

“We believe that true transformation happens when we engage the whole person—mind, body, and spirit,” Coleman stated. “We also recognize that many individuals with addiction histories also have underlying issues, so we incorporate trauma-informed practices into our treatment model. By addressing past trauma within a faith-centered framework, we provide clients with tools for healing and long-term recovery.”

Coleman pointed out that one of Peniel’s standout programs is the Expectant Mothers and Women and Children Program, designed to support pregnant women and mothers of young children who are battling addiction. The initiative provides mothers the opportunity to have their children with them in a safe treatment environment with positive support. Coleman explained that mothers can continue to receive the prenatal care and parenting education that will help them connect with their children while receiving treatment.

Peniel Ministries recently secured a $75,000 grant through the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies to expand the services offered through the Expectant Mothers and Women and Children Program. The grant will provide funds for playground equipment, children’s education materials, technology, and equipment.

“This will allow Peniel to offer even more comprehensive support and care that is tailored to the specific challenges these mothers face,” Coleman said.

Peniel’s reputation for compliance excellence was recently demonstrated when the organization achieved a 99.9% compliance score with the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), reflecting their commitment to maintaining the highest standards of care, even amidst organizational transitions and challenges.

Peniel was founded by the late Dr. Marion Spellman who passed away on October 30, 2023. She was a gifted speaker and voice of hope for the underrepresented. For over 40 years she served as the leader of Peniel, transforming countless lives through her vision, dedication, and compassion.

“Her legacy and influence continues to live on in the lives of a dedicated team of men and women who are privileged to carry on this important and needed work,” Coleman stated. “It is my commitment to continue the mission that Dr. Spellman began, maintaining Peniel’s reputation as a place where individuals meet God face-to-face and experience life-changing transformation. Her personal mentorship has been instrumental in preparing me for this role, ensuring that the transition of leadership is rooted in continuity, faithfulness and deep respect for the foundation of Peniel.”

Peniel’s partnership with the Church of God has been in place for decades through key leaders serving on the organization’s board of directors and other roles. Peniel also recently launched a partnership with Lee University, offering clients the chance to earn college credits while engaged in treatment. The groundbreaking initiative provides clients the opportunity to pursue a better future through education and skill development during their treatment.

Coleman is confident of the strengthened partnership with the Church of God. Placement of Peniel under the Care Division is part of a focus on strategic expansion. Second Assistant General Overseer T. Wayne Dority serves as liaison to the Executive Committee and as part of the Care Division, led by former General Overseer Dr. Raymond F. Culpepper.

“Peniel is poised to continue to build on our celebrated legacy of restoring broken lives,” Coleman concluded. “While the core of the mission remains the same, Peniel continues to expand and innovate to broaden our impact.”
