CA/NV Regional Office Reports on California Fire Relief Efforts
Fresno, CA—The Church of God Regional Office recently submitted a report detailing the Church of God response the recent California wildfires, which devastated Los Angeles County, impacted San Diego, and resulted in an estimated 18,000 homes severely damaged or destroyed.
Triggered by extreme dry conditions and hurricane force winds exceeding 90 mph, the fires, beginning with the Palisades Fire on January 7, necessitated the temporary suspension of critical air support. Despite containment efforts on the Palisades and Eaton Fires, the impact remains far-reaching and enduring.
According to Clifton Clarke, coordinator of the California fire relief efforts, appointed by Administrative Bishop Pat Wright, the focus was to provide immediate and sustained support to affected communities. Clarke’s involvement began with assisting displaced members of his congregation and their families, many of whom sought refuge in the city of Simi Valley.
“Recognizing the widespread devastation, I partnered with Pastor Kerwin Manning of Pasadena, whose church and home were impacted,” Clarke stated. “Bishop Wright’s awareness of my efforts through social media led to a pivotal moment. He facilitated a generous donation through General Overseer Gary Lewis, enabling us to organize a comprehensive relief effort.” The effort included procuring and delivering bulk supplies to the Pasadena church and other distribution centers, and providing thousands of dollars in direct financial assistance to individuals and organizations.
“A significant highlight was a visit from General Overseer Gary Lewis, alongside Bishops Tony Stewart, John Childers, and Pat Wright, which allowed us to showcase the devastation firsthand.”
With the fires largely contained, the efforts are transitioning to a long-term rebuilding phase, which involves addressing infrastructure repair, housing reconstruction, and the profound psychological needs of affected individuals.
“We are committed to providing ongoing financial assistance, facilitating resource access, and offering emotional and spiritual support,” Clarke said. “The Church’s response has exemplified the love of God, showcasing our commitment to serving without expectation of reciprocation. We have provided practical assistance, emotional support, and spiritual guidance, demonstrating the power of faith in action.”
Future strategies include tailoring the efforts to meet evolving needs of the rebuilding phase. Partnerships with other organizations are being explored to provide comprehensive services, including mental health counseling and long-term housing solutions, ensuring a sustained and impactful recovery.
