A Massachusetts resident is concerned about a phone tree message sent out by the local school system.
Michael Carl says the Gideons are planning to distribute Bibles on the public sidewalk in front of Beverly High School. He notes that school officials are concerned about the planned Bible distribution, and that concern prompted Principal Sean Gallagher to deliver a phone tree message to parents. The message asked parents to discuss the situation with their children and prepare them for any potential confrontations between the Gideons.
Carl, a veteran journalist, interviewed Beverly school superintendent Dr. James Hayes and provided OneNewsNow with this sound bite.
“[I]t’s a very unusual circumstance for kids as they normally go about their business everyday of leaving school to be encountered with some unusual event, that’s all,” Hayes said. “They are middle school-aged kids and high school-aged kids, so it’s simply so that they can anticipate — or their parents can help them anticipate in that interaction — how to deal with it.”
Carl notes that the Gideons are not known to be confrontational while handing out their material. The Gideons, he adds, have declined to say when they plan to distribute the Bibles in front of the school.
