Volunteers Still Needed in Haiti

The following is a report on the on-going relief effort in Haiti from Church of God missionaries Jim and Gina Hudson:

We have been working diligently on getting things up and running at the Church of God compound in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Because of the lack of housing, transportation, fuel and food, we didn’t want to schedule any teams until we were ably prepared to accommodate the work teams. We now have updated information concerning work teams and scheduling.

World Missions has appointed a Men and Women of Action couple, Jim and Gina Hudson, to manage all Haiti Rebuilding efforts. Jim is presently on-site and Gina will be joining him in the next month. Jim and Gina lived over two years in Chalmette, Louisiana, and coordinated all the relief efforts during Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area. Because of their experience with disaster relief efforts, they are an ideal choice to coordinate the rebuilding. We are in the beginning stages of getting everything in place. A small MWOA team just left the Church of God compound after helping Jim work on the house, electricity, water and other situations. There is much to be done!

Here’s the latest report:

We are making progress! A shipping container is on its way to Port-au-Prince loaded with items that were purchased and that were donated to use in rebuilding. Building supplies, equipment, cots, mattresses, 5 large tents, 4 prefab metal houses, generators, a stove and many other items are in the container. As soon as it arrives and is unloaded at the Church of God Compound we can begin to plan for future work teams. We are in the process of getting a large vehicle/truck which we can use to transport the teams and supplies.

We hope to begin receiving work teams in June 2010. We plan to schedule teams to come and work throughout the rest of this year and on into 2011. We can accommodate teams up to 15 members at one time. We have begun the scheduling, so if you are interested please contact the MWOA office. We ask that volunteers be in good health, have all their shots, have a strong work ethic, good spirited, willing to endure rough conditions and be a team player. We are not able to take anyone under the age of 18 at this time. The cost will be $30 a day per person for expenses (food, fuel, water, housing, etc.) plus your airfare and insurance cost. Depending on where you are flying from, airfare is running anywhere from $375 to $800. Also, each group will need to bring their own cook to prepare the team’s meals.
