The International Congress on World Evangelization will convene in Cape Town South Africa on October 16-25, 2010.
Rev. Billy Graham convened the first International Congress on World Evangelization in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1974 (thus, the name “Lausanne” movement). This was followed by “Lausanne II” in Manila in 1989, and many other consultations around special themes and issues.
Now, the third major gathering will convene in Cape Town, South Africa from October 16 – 25. Christianity Today has called this meeting “the most diverse gathering ever,” especially noting the presence of more, younger, ethnically diverse, and geographically varied missions leaders than ever before.
“Cape Town 2010” will include:
• 4,500 leaders (60% under age 50) from 200 countries.
• 1,000 volunteers, stewards, and media representatives.
• More than 600 “Globalink” remote sites around the world.
• Intensive Bible study and prayer in small groups.
• Interactive discussions on strategic issues in world missions.
• Planning for future cooperation in world evangelization.
According to Grant McClung, president of Missions Resource Group, in a recent email of a conversation with Graham about the upcoming conference, the evangelist said, “Keep evangelism at the center. Make Christ your focus. Base everything on Scripture. And pray, pray, pray.”
Using the most advanced technologies available, hundreds of thousands will be participating in the conference “off site” by watching video of the congress and engaging in virtual discussions through the “Lausanne Global Conversation.” The online participation can be viewed at www.lausanne.org/globalink.
