Oklahoma Lutheran Church Changing Denominations

EDMOND, OK – An Oklahoma congregation is breaking away from Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and will join another Lutheran denomination.

Members of Peace Lutheran Church in Edmond voted 109-6 on Sunday to cut ties with the ELCA. Peace Lutheran will become part of the North American Lutheran Church, a denomination created by groups dissatisfied with the ELCA.

Joe Palmer, the congregation’s president, tells The Oklahoman newspaper that Peace Lutheran’s ties with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will end June 30.

Palmer says the congregation believes the ELCA’s decision to accept pastors in same-sex relationships was a departure from Scripture.
