Update on Missouri Church of God Disaster Relief

Earlier this week, one of the most powerful tornadoes in U.S. history ripped through the heart of Joplin, Missouri. In the midst of disaster and chaos, God is doing amazing things.

Reports from the tornado revealed Church of God structures were only slightly damaged and no members killed, but a twister of this magnitude has touched every life within the devastated region. The Church of God in Missouri reports that a portable kitchen has been set up at the Joplin Church of God, and with the help of a number of charitable organizations, including Operation Compassion, the Joplin Church has been serving warm meals to hundreds of people. According to Matthew Propes, state youth and discipleship director, some of the firemen who had breakfast at the church on Wednesday morning stated that it was the first warm meal they had since Sunday. Bishop Thomas Gillum was on site in Joplin and reported the awesome work of God in the city.

“God is opening doors of opportunity for the people of the Joplin Church of God to reach their community through the love of Jesus Christ,” Gillum stated.

As reported earlier, the church building itself was slightly damaged but is able to be repaired. All members are accounted for, but two homes of members were lost. Donated goods and materials have been pouring in, and a distribution center has been set up at the church.

Earlier this week, over twenty-one tornadoes hit other parts of Missouri, including Sedalia, the site of Crossroads Family Worship Church of God. Pastor Michael Chilton has informed the state office that no church property was damaged, and no members reported any direct impact. Many connected to the church have experienced damage, however, and the Crossroads Family Worship is working to assist the community recovery.

“At this point, they have received ample donations of goods and now need manual labor assistance for repairs and the distribution of meals and materials,” Gillum said. “Any financial gifts would be welcomed as well. We thank God for His mercy and ask that you continue to keep the people of Joplin and Sedalia in your prayers.”

Anyone who wishes to volunteer may contact the Joplin Church of God and Pastor Glen Pinkerton directly at (417) 623-6116. Financial donations may also be directed to the state office at PO Box 1060, Park Hills, MO, 63601. The phone number for the state office is (573) 431-6984.
