125th Anniversary Series: Our Earliest Recorded History
The first history of the Church of God was written as a chapter in A.J. Tomlinson’s book, The Last Great Conflict, in 1913. The chapter was titled “Brief History of the Church that is Now Recognized as the Church of God,” and is the first written account of the founding of the Christian Union, the Shearer Schoolhouse revival, the organization of the Holiness Church at Camp Creek, and the first General Assembly.
Although Tomlinson did not join the Church of God until 1903, he knew those involved in the earlier events. An edited version of his history was later published in a widely used compilation of early General Assembly minutes known as Book of Minutes. The edited version was sometimes attributed to L. Howard Jullerat. Tomlinson’s entire book is available from Pathway Press (www.pathwaybookstore.com) as part of the DVD-Rom Church of God Publications, 1901-1903.
