General Assembly Slated for One Year from This Week

The 74th International General Assembly of the Church of God will take place July 24-27, 2012 in Orlando, Florida. The announcement of the date and location was made last year at the closing of the 73rd General Assembly on July 30, 2010.

GA2012 will take place in the same city and location as in 2010 at the Orange County Convention Center on International Drive. This is the first time since 1976 that the General Assembly will have been held consecutively in the same city for two or more years. The 54th, 55th, and 56th general assemblies were held in Dallas, Texas in 1972, 1974, and 1976.

This will be only the second time a general assembly has been staged in Orlando or the state of Florida. Some of the multi-year destination cities of past general assembly events have been Indianapolis, Dallas, Birmingham, Chattanooga, Memphis and San Antonio. With the exception of two years, between 1908 and 1933, the general assembly was held in Cleveland, Tennessee. In 1945 the general assembly voted to meet every other year, rather than annually.

Plans are already underway for GA2012. What worked well during GA2010 will remain, as much of the groundwork was laid last year, including the worship and business session venues, as well as the exhibit hall. A significant upgrade to the housing picture will be the addition of several hundred new rooms at the Peabody Hotel, located next to the OCCC and connected by a covered walkway.

The General Assembly Cabinet, the group tasked with producing the event, has held preliminary meetings. A special Web site dedicated to all aspects of the 74th General Assembly, including on-line registration, will be launched in January 2012.
