When I approach November 6 each year, I pause to reflect upon the extraordinary missions influence of L. Howard Juillerat. On November 6, 1918, the young life of this visionary missions mobilizer in the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee) was cut short by the global influenza pandemic of 1918. It is estimated that 70 million people worldwide died in that horrible plague. Those seventy million, and countless millions more of his generation, were carried constantly on his compassionate heart.
The year was 1944 and the United States was at war on two fronts. In this atmosphere decisions were made quickly. Nineteen year old Baswell Smith had met his love, Cornelia Groover, and she had agreed to become his wife. Baswell went to her home and asked her father for permission to marry her.
