Operation Compassion Responds to West Virginia Flooding
West Virginia was hit late last week with what is being called “a 1,000 year flood” after torrential rains dropped more than 10 inches of rain in several counties, the worst being in Greenbrier County where 17 people were killed and scores of homes and businesses were destroyed. In other locations, at least 8 people were killed bringing the total death toll to at least 25 with some people still reported as missing.
In response to this devastation, Operation Compassion, an independent benevolent organization with roots in the Church of God. and their long term partner, God’s Pit Crew, have sent seven semi-trucks loaded with disaster relief supplies including bottled water, food, blankets and cleaning supplies. Many of Operation Compassion’s partners are responding as well; Mercy Chefs is set up and serving hot meals in the White Sulpher Springs area.
In addition, Operation Compassion’s pastoral partners are stepping forward as well. Pastor Tim Teague of the Victory Hill Church in Carroll, Ohio is undertaking a city-wide collection in the Columbus area for crucial disaster relief items needed by the flood survivors. Local television and radio stations and the newspaper have interviewed him to promote the collection.
Pastor J.B. Hurt, Lifeline Princeton Church of God in Princeton, West Virginia, is coordinating the relief efforts for Operation Compassion and the West Virginia Flood Relief.
“There are many people in need today because of the destructive weather pattern across West Virginia,” stated Dave Lorency, president of Operation Compassion. “As more rain and severe thunderstorms remain in the current forecast, this could be just the beginning of a massive response to the flood survivors. Operation Compassion needs your financial help! A donation today could save a life tomorrow!”
