Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship Releases ‘The Spirit in Luke-Acts’
The Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship (TFFPS) has released the English translation of Dr. Odette Mainville’s L’Esprit dans l’œuvre de Luc, which was translated by Assemblies of God missionary to France Suzanne Spolarich and given the title The Spirit in Luke-Acts.
Like the Foundation’s first translation project, Gonzalo Haya-Prats’s Empowered Believers: The Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts, Mainville’s work is a revised doctoral dissertation; it was successfully defended by Mainville at the University of Montreal in 1989 and then published by La Corporation des Éditions Fides in 1991.
The English translation has been praised by numerous New Testament scholars, including Lukan scholars such as Dr. Craig Keener, Dr. William Kurz, and Dr. Robert Menzies, the latter also provided the Foreword to the book, in which he wrote the following: “I warmly recommend this insightful reading of Luke-Acts to you. It is filled with interesting exegesis and challenging observations. It affirms, perhaps unconsciously, a Pentecostal reading of Luke-Acts, but does so from a fresh perspective that interacts with a wide range of scholarship, including works from French-speaking authors that may be largely unknown to many North American readers. I trust that you will find this book as enjoyable, enriching, and edifying as I did.” Dr. Kurz wrote that the book “is a most careful, enlightening and fresh interpretation of the Holy Spirit’s role in Luke and Acts, from the surprising starting point of a single verse, Acts 2:33 . . . I wholeheartedly endorse this book.” And Dr. Keener wrote, “Mainville’s work is helpful for its engagement with traditional approaches and for its fresh contributions and insights. . . . This is surely a welcome study.”
The Foundation contracted with Mainville in April of 2012 and Spolarich in July of 2012. The next four years were spent translating, editing, and polishing under close scrutiny of Mainville, who is also fluent in English.
The Spirit in Luke-Acts, published under the Foundation’s imprint, is available in paperback from Amazon.com for $21.99.
TFFPS was formed in 2005 with the goal of advancing biblical scholarship by sponsoring research and publishing projects within the global Pentecostal-Charismatic family. TFFPS is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.
