Operation Compassion, an independent benevolent organization with ties to the Church of God, is sending containers filled with emergency supplies of water, Gatorade, Propel, dehydration salts, medical supplies, buckets of hope, hygiene kits, and other supplies designed to combat this outbreak.
Most of the sick has come to the local hospital in St. Marc for treatment, inundating the hospital’s staff. The parking lot was filled with patients lying on rain and feces soaked sheets waiting for medical staff to begin treatment. While others lay there with IV’s in their arms hoping the medicine will save their lives.
According the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention no cholera outbreaks had been reported in Haiti for decades before the earthquake. Haitian officials, including President Rene Preval, have been pointing to the lack of severe disease outbreaks as a success of the earthquake response.
Operation Compassion has sent 205 containers filled with goods and supplies to Haiti since the earthquake. These emergency containers filled with dehydration products will need to get there as quickly as possible in order to stem the tide of the cholera outbreak.
