Illinois was pounded by numerous tornadoes last Sunday morning and afternoon. As many as six people died in Illinois, more than 400 homes were destroyed and many more damaged. Throughout the Midwest people took shelter only to come out to see the reality of such devastation and loss.
On Sunday, November 17, tornadoes touched down across three states, Illinois, Kentucky and Indiana. The congregations and members of the Church of God in these areas were affected in several ways. In Brookport, Illinois, two Church of God members were killed and one is in the hospital with severe head injuries. One retired pastor’s home was damaged and his children lost their home. The Church of God, working with Operation Compassion is already responding to these areas. Two semi-tractor trailers, as well as a box truck have delivered supplies to Brookport, Illinois.
One of the greatest disasters the world has ever witnessed is unfolding in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. With thousands dead and missing and thousands more displaced, disaster relief has been a difficult challenge for the Philippine Government and NGO’s. However, Operation Compassion, an independent benevolent organization with roots in the Church of God, has been engaged in a number of disaster relief activities trying to help as much as possible.
