Operation Compassion Partners for Outreach in New York City
During the past several months, Operation Compassion, an independent benevolent organization with ties to the Church of God, has been responding to disasters across the United States and around the world. In the midst of all this disaster activity, a few partners wanted to reach out to help those living in poverty the inner city of New York.
Operation Compassion provided a semi-truck filled with 500 food boxes and 500 hygiene boxes for distribution in several locations across the city. The largest distribution was in Spanish Harlem as families lined up around the block to receive the goods. Many families were facing the prospects of not having any food in the house to prepare. The food boxes had enough food stuffs for a family of four.
The American Bible Society provided a musical float that created a mini-parade from 96th Street to 122nd Street, along 3rd Avenue. The music was playing, children were dancing and families were walking alongside the float to the distribution point. ABS was also giving away Bibles and scripture portions to those that asked. The parade celebrated the diversity of ethnicities found in the inner city.
In addition to Spanish Harlem in the Bronx, there were there two other boroughs, Queens and Manhattan that had distributions and the city of Yonkers north of the Bronx. The Bowery neighborhood of Manhattan was an area that was in need of a food distribution. Many homeless and persons living without any means of help or support have been forgotten and cast aside there. The residents were most appreciative for the Compassion boxes.
City Vision and DoGood provided volunteers from all parts of the country. City Vision, under the direction of Tom Madden, provides a place for teenaged volunteers to take one week of their summer to spend working with children and teens living in a different culture and environment. DoGood volunteers, under the direction of Vince Hungate in Atlanta, Ga., brought more than 140 kids. Together, these volunteers helped with block parties, acts of kindness, gave hot meals and impacted more than 5,000 people with the product donated by a semi-truck from Operation Compassion.
“Operation Compassion is always honored to join our partners in making an impact on people with needs,” stated OC Director David Lorency. “It does not matter if they live in one of the inner cities across America or are facing a natural disaster, Operation Compassion is there!”
