Lee University Homecoming Is This Weekend

Lee University Homecoming begins Friday, November 4 at noon with a check-in buffet in the new Science and Math Complex, and culminates with the 51st annual Music Festival on Saturday, November 5 in Conn Center.

According to the Lee Alumni Director Mitzi Mew, traditional events are still in place, but some new additions and a few surprises are scheduled for the weekend. “We think this may be the best Homecoming schedule we’ve had in a long time,” said Mew. “If Lee alumni haven’t been to Homecoming in a few years, this is definitely the year to come back. We want all former and current Lee students to have a great time.”

One featured change is the new “Check-In Buffet” that will be open Friday from 12 p.m.-2 p.m. in the Science and Math Complex. Check-In will continue until 6 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday. The first 1,000 alumni to check-in will receive a free Lee t-shirt.

New this year is the Alumni Grand Reunion. “We’ve decided to have one large reunion instead of several small ones,” said Mew. “All Alumni from all classes are invited and we’ll have a live band, pasta bar, hilarious decade displays, and lots of fun.” Highlighting the classes of ’71, ’81, ’91, and ’01, this event will be in the Paul Conn Student Union on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

The special dedication of the Lee University Chapel will be at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The chapel is located at the corner of Ocoee and 11th Streets. Students will be on sight to lead open house tours of the chapel on Friday and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Golfers are invited to be a part of the Alumni Golf Classic at Chatata Valley Golf Course on Friday, Nov.4. Registration starts at 8 a.m., and cost is $50 per golfer ($200 per team) and includes a box lunch. Please contact the Alumni office at (423) 614-8318 for more information.

Lee Theatre will premiere the celebrated French comedy Tartuffe by Moliere for Homecoming weekend. Performances on Friday and Saturday will be at 7:30 p.m. and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Dixon Center auditorium. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Dr. Christine Williams, associate professor of theatre, will direct the play.

The annual Homecoming music festival will take place Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the Conn Center. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students. A special celebration of Dr. Paul Conn’s 25th anniversary as university president will be featured during the festival.

The 2011 Homecoming weekend also offers a line-up of athletic events to round out the weekend, including men and women’s basketball, volleyball, and a 5K Run.

The Lady Flames volleyball team will host Volley for the Cure, an event that has raised over $69,000 to help find a cure for breast cancer. The game will be Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the Walker arena where the Lady Flames will face-off against Brenau University.

The 5K Fun Run will kick-off Saturday morning, with registration starting at 7:00 a.m. and the run starting at 8:00 a.m. in front of the PCSU. Cost is $15 per runner, with no charge for Lee students presenting a student ID.

The much anticipated Homecoming basketball games will be on Saturday in the Walker arena. The Lady Flames will take on Tennessee Wesleyan at 12:00 p.m., followed by the men’s team who will battle longtime rival Tennessee Temple at 2:15 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Returning this year are the popular student exhibits and the Homecoming Tailgate Party, both held in the Walker Arena parking lot. The student exhibits begin at 10:00 a.m. and the tailgate party at noon.

Featured reunions include Sigma Nu Sigma’s 45th, Omega Alpha Phi’s 15th, the Diversity Council’s 10th, and a Hughes Hall Affinity reunion intended for any former resident of the old Hughes Hall. Lee University dedicated a new Hughes Hall at the beginning of this semester.

For alumni who are unable to attend the festivities, a virtual homecoming will be available during the Music Festival and Grand Reunion through live streaming online at www.leeuniversity.edu.
