Missionaries Working Against Child Labor In Ecuador

Church of God missionaries Dan and Teresa Susong report on their efforts working with children rescued from child labor.

ECUADOR — This year we will be working directly with 1,000 children and adolescents, and their parents. All the participants are either involved in child labor, have been rescued from child labor, or are at risk. The families of each of these children will be receiving a scholarship to allow their children to continue their schooling at either the elementary or secondary level.

The biggest news is that we are opening a permanent ministry extension in Macas, Ecuador. This program will start with direct services to 100 needy children and their parents, many of whom are part of the Shuar Indian group out of the jungle region. We will be working in conjunction with Church of God pastor, Miller Gonzolez. We will also have a daily Pro Nino Club after school program where the children will hear the Word of God, receive help with homework, and enjoy recreation time. Our work with their parents will include monthly workshops, counseling support, and evangelism. Here in Quito we will continue our six-day-a-week feeding and after school program, as well as the New World Christian School for working adolescents.

In the outlying provinces, we have two permanent teams who minister in seven Quichua Indian Communities on a daily basis. Our goal is to prevent school dropout and to encourage the families to keep their children and teenagers at home, off the streets of the big cities, and out of the labor market. Most of the children will be involved in our after school programs where they have daily devotions and receive help with homework.
