God’s Pit Crew Builds Home, Supplies Van for Houston Family
Last October, God’s Pit Crew partnered with Joyce Meyer Ministries to rebuild the homes of three families who lost everything they owned during Hurricane Harvey. From the beginning, God’s Pit Crew, an independent non-profit recovery and disaster assistance organization that partners with the Church of God, knew it would be a long-term recovery effort for the greater Houston, Texas area.
Once flood waters receded, a team of GPC volunteers from Louisiana, arrived in Texas to begin gutting out flooded and damaged homes. GPC board member Mike Newcomb led the team of volunteers, and met Pastor Jesus Corona and his wife, Mary, whose home had been ravaged by flood waters.
Years before Harvey destroyed the Corona family’s home, Jesus had a terrible accident. While working in an oil tank, he fell approximately 80 feet, crashing to the steel floor of the tank. At the time, Jesus was not a Christian. After calling out to the gods and idols he worshipped, he got no response. Jesus then called out to God. He remembers a hand reaching up to him before he lost consciousness. Jesus said he could feel the presence of God. The accident left him paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Since then, he has dedicated his life to the Lord and serves as a pastor at a small Hispanic church in the Houston area.
After hearing Pastor Corona’s powerful testimony, GPC committed to rebuild Jesus and Mary’s home. The preliminary team of volunteers, led by Newcomb, continued to gut and begin renovations to the flood damaged home, partnering with Joyce Meyer Ministries. A small team, led by GPC volunteer Earl Kirks, worked tirelessly for two weeks to complete the work that was started by the Louisiana based team.
During the interview process, God’s Pit Crew found out that the Corona family not only lost their home to the flood, but their handicap accessible van, which took away Pastor Jesus’s independence. GPC began to research how to get a new van. Through the blessings of many contributors, GPC was able to purchase a brand new 2017 van, with all the necessary handicap accessible features, for the Corona family. The new van has allowed Pastor Corona to get his independence back, so he can get back and forth to different places easier.
When the home was revealed to the Pastor Jesus and Mary, nothing but praises and Glory to God could be heard over their excitement. Mary said, “The only thing that I can say is ‘Praise you, Jesus, for loving us, for protecting us, and for giving us each one of you as a family of God.’”
