Summer Honors Welcomes 210 Students
Lee University’s 33rd annual Summer Honors program recently hosted more than 200 high school students from around the country for a two-week experience, providing incoming freshmen and rising high school seniors with a unique educational, spiritual, and interactive encounter to prepare them for the academic and social challenges of college.
Participants had many opportunities in and out of the classroom during their two-week stay, including picking two of the 13 classes offered in order to receive six college credits.
Class selections included “Don’t Do Business Like a Zombie,” “Keeping Secrets Secret: The Mathematical Art to Making and Breaking Codes,” “Go…Transforming Communities through Service,” and “Lessons from Leaders: Ancient to Contemporary,” among others.
Outside the classroom, activities were planned for the students such as a trip to the theatre to see “Incredibles 2,” whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River, a night of bowling in Chattanooga, and a Switchfoot concert at Chattanooga’s Riverbend Festival.
“Summer Honors was such an amazing experience,” said Emily House, a recent high school graduate from Ocala, Florida, who attended Summer Honors this summer and last. “My favorite part about it is by far the people. The professors challenge you, but they also strive to connect with each individual student. The staff is cheerful and always ready to serve, and I got to know other students with whom a lifelong friendship was formed.”
Through devotionals and small groups, students are able to experience the spiritual side of campus life. This year’s spiritual theme, “Come Alive,” was an invitation to “roll the stones away, help each other do the same, and catch stones that are being thrown at others.”
“Summer Honors 2018 was a life-giving experience for all of our students and staff,” said Dr. Mike Hayes, vice president for student development at Lee. “The 210 students who participated this year were a phenomenal group of incredibly gifted and caring leaders. Working with them over the past two weeks inspires me even more for how this generation cares deeply and seeks to be a transformative force in our world.”
