Educators Charged With Praying Get Congressional Support

WASHINGTON, DC – More than 30 members of Congress have signed a letter supporting two Florida educators who face criminal charges for praying with other adults at a school-related luncheon.

Pace High School principal Frank Lay and athletic director Robert Freeman go on trial in Pensacola today for allegedly violating a federal court order prohibiting prayer at school events. On Jan. 28, Lay encouraged Freeman to lead a prayer of blessing at a school-day appreciation luncheon for adults who had helped with a field house project. Freeman complied. No students were present. If convicted, Lay and Freeman face up to six months in jail, $5,000 fines and loss of pension benefits.

American Civil Liberties Union staff attorney Benjamin Stevenson says the issue isn’t prayer, but whether school officials can get away with violating a court order.

The letter to Lay and Freeman from members of Congress says, “We are standing with you in prayer.”
