Menorah – Yes, Nativity – No
Though Boca Raton does permit a public Jewish menorah display on government property, the Florida city is declining Christians the right to display any Christmas symbols relating to their beliefs.
Catholic League spokesman Jeff Field tells OneNewsNow the citizens of the town informed his group that the nativity scene had been rejected at city hall, “but they are having secular symbols, such as a Christmas tree and snowflakes, and they’re having a religious symbol for people of the Jewish faith — the menorah.”
So since the town is permitting a religious symbol for Jews, the Catholic League is asking why it will not allow one for Christians, such as the nativity scene.
Field contends the tree and snowflakes are not Christian emblems and do not reflect the reason for the season. He points out that Boca Radon does permit the nativity scene in the city’s Sanborn Square Park, which is considered a free speech zone, “but that’s not the same as having it in public buildings where they have the menorah,” he argues. “We want equal time, equal share. We want a nativity scene next to the menorah in the public buildings.”
But the Catholic League spokesman says whether that happens or not really depends on the degree to which local residents contact city hall and request fair treatment.
